CHAPTER 10:

Oscar was excited. He was about to make the necessary documented flight to earn his astronaut wings. They had already been awarded, because of his trip out to the Prince Carl, but Oscar did not really think that counted. This would be his flight; he would be at the controls. Morgan had explained that it was not hard to escape from the atmosphere of earth, but there were a few things he needed to keep in mind.

As Morgan explained it Oscar needed to stop thinking about earth as a fixed point in space. It was not, she explained that it would be easier if he thought of earth as just another aircraft carrier. A large body of metal moving through a great void. He could fly from it, and to it. But it would never be where he had left it. Everything moved, and that, Morgan explained was the trick to deep space navigation. Just remember everything moves, and you would be alright. It was easier for her, as she could calculate the movements of planetary bodies while playing four games of chess, but the concept was the same.

For this flight, they would be leaving earth. However, there was nothing on the planet that could bring them back if they messed up. The escape pod had a reserve of oxygen, water, and rations that, in theory could keep them alive for almost a week. No one was sure if the Imperial Navy could get a ship back to earth in that time to pick them up.

NASA and the Russian Space agency were consulted, both said that they could not get anything up to help in such a short time without knowing where they might be. Morgan dismissed it. She explained that this was a very routine flight, almost like a drive to the local 7/11 for snacks. The engineers were concerned, Oscar decided he trusted Morgan more than NASA. The mission was a go. Morgan also knew that her daddy would not let her die here, even if it took him a week to get to earth to rescue her.

Oscar and Morgan each packed a few extra chem lights in their flight suits, stashed a couple extra energy bars and the small cargo compartment was packed with a few cases of sports drinks. (Oscar figured at least he would have a pee bottle if necessary. He did not trust the relief tube.) It wasn’t until Oscar saw Morgan watching him load cases of beverages and MRE’s into the space behind her seat with a bemused look on her face that he wondered how she’d pee in space on a long mission. (The relief tube…) She did not look like she was carrying much of anything extra, apart from the glow sticks, but he wondered. He climbed down from the cockpit and walked over.

“Anything you want me to pack for you?” She was still wearing the same smirk. Then, she shook her head.

“I have some stuff on the way, it’s not here yet.
